Team Captains Meeting

Here are some highlights of the Team Captains Meeting.  I'm noting all the areas I think are most relevant for our team.  However, if you like to see the full set of notes, they are located here.

  1. Rules: All rules are going to be more strictly enforced this year. They particularly emphasized the use of safety gear, having your team number consistently pinned to your chest while running, runner sequencing and substitutions.
  2. Rules: Only the current leg team van is permitted at the minor exchanges (i.e., Van 2 cannot be at exchange 2,3,4 or 5, Van 1 cannot be at exchange 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, etc)
  3. Safety: As a reminder, for support legs we are allowed to support our runner.  Non-support legs we cannot support our runners at all 12 (Rebecca), 16 (Danielle), 17 (John), 18 (AnneMarie), 19 (Tom), 30 (AnneMarie). Any non-supported legs beyond 4 miles will have at least one water station.
  4. Safety: Non-runners outside the van will need to have an orange safety flag with them in order to cross the street.
  5. Flags: We will need to supply a credit card at check in to get two orange flags.  If the flags are not returned, there will be a $15 charge.  Each van will have to do this to get their own two orange flags.
  6. Safety: No sleeping in parking lots.
  7. Safety: When pulling over to assist a runner, the can must be completely off the road.  Police are expected to be on high alert along the coast looking for violations.
  8. Heat: Forecasts call for temperatures of 93-103 and 74-84 along the coast.
  9. Waivers: A separate waiver for the County of San Diego is required to be signed when we check in.
  10. Chip Timing:  Runner #1 (James) will wear the chip to start the race and Runner #12 (Rebecca) will need to wear the chip on her last leg.  This way they capture accurate start and finish times.  We must not lose the chip.
  11. Course notes: Leg 1-4 (James, Wade, Nikki & Danielle) are along the Santa Ana River Trail.  Very little support, if any can be provided to the runners.
  12. Course notes: Leg 11 (Amy) There is construction for about 1⁄4 mile on Temescal Canyon Road, closing the northbound lane of traffic. We
are putting traffic control on the leg, but need all vans to take an alternate route using Campbell Ranch Road to Indian Truck Trail. We will have van directional signage on the route. This will help keep runners safe with significantly less traffic to worry about.
  13. Exchange 12 (Rebecca) Please enter Alberhill Park by turning left onto Coal Road. There are lane dividers set up that make it impossible to make a left hand turn into park from Lake Street.
  14. Leg 31 (Tom) is mostly on sidewalks and trails. It gets a little confusing and there will be plenty of people around, so make sure to have your runner familiarize themselves with that leg map. Vans, please do not follow the runner. We rerouted you to stay on Torrey Pines because of the traffic congestion in La Jolla. Vans will inevitably get behind their runner if they drive through here.
  15. Leg 34 (Tiffany) Harbor Drive is closed from 28th Street to 32nd Street due to construction. Vans need to detour to Main Street to National City Blvd to 8th Street turning left back onto Harbor. We will have van directional to help. Runners will stay on Harbor, running against traffic in the bike lane through the construction area.
FINISH LINE PARKING: ONLY participant vans with hang tags are allowed to park at the finish line. There is a park and ride shuttle for other vehicles at $10 per vehicle. This is located at Mar Vista High School, 505 Elm Ave, Imperial Beach from 10:00am-8:00pm. Last shuttle leaves finish line at 8:00pm and gates will be locked at the school after last shuttle arrives. Silverstrand Beach parking starting at 7:00pm will be open to spectators.
