Question and sort of answer from the Napa Valley Race director

Cydney,
I was looking at the Ragnar website and didn't see any information on venues such as places to shower and rest along the way.  Has that been something that was offered in past Napa Valley races?  If so, can you give me a sense of what we might be able to expect?  I am certain you are still putting things together, but wanted to at least try to anticipate what may or may not be available for this race.
Thanks,
James Sloan

Hi James,

We are still working on the logistics for showers and other sweet happenings. If you would like, please check back in the coming months and I should have more information for you.

SoCal Ragnar Time Update

I was finally able to update all of the times in Tom's spreadsheet.  I have validated many of the times from a few sources.  I think these are finally accurate.  The distance is based on the official Ragnar distances and the actual times we recorded for each leg.  We are all aware that some of our times are negatively affected by stop lights, cars pulling out in front of us, poor directional signs and HOT weather.
That's Ragnar!
Here is the summary.
9:40 Estimated Team Pace, 10:06 Actual Team Pace
32:45:42 Estimated Total Time, 34:13:24 Actual Total Time
1) Wade 21.6 miles, 9:00 Estimated Pace, 8:20 Actual Pace.
2) Nikki 19.0 miles, 9:00 Estimated Pace, 8:24 Actual Pace.
3) James 20.6 miles, 8:30 Estimated Pace, 8:30 Actual Pace.
4) Dave 19.8 miles, 9:00 Estimated Pace, 8:30 Actual Pace.
5) 5) John 15.9 miles, 9:00 Estimated Pace, 9:07 Actual Pace.
6) Tom 19.6 miles, 9:15 Estimated Pace, 9:09 Actual Pace.
7) Danielle 13.2 miles, 10:00 Estimated Pace, 10:09 Actual Pace.
8) AnneMarie 14.3 miles, 10:00 Estimated Pace, 10:41 Actual Pace.

Van #1 Rest Stop

Just to remind Van #1, we will be stopping at my cousins to shower and rest.  It is not a big house, but they are great people and very hospitable.  They will have sandwich and salad stuff for us to eat and we can put in a load of laundry too.

Van #1 Reflective Vests

Van #1,
I have two reflective vests to bring and I borrowed two more from people in our ward.  We still need two more to check in.  Between John, Nikki and Wade, we need you guys to find two vests for us to use.

Team Captains Meeting

Here are some highlights of the Team Captains Meeting.  I'm noting all the areas I think are most relevant for our team.  However, if you like to see the full set of notes, they are located here.

  1. Rules: All rules are going to be more strictly enforced this year. They particularly emphasized the use of safety gear, having your team number consistently pinned to your chest while running, runner sequencing and substitutions.
  2. Rules: Only the current leg team van is permitted at the minor exchanges (i.e., Van 2 cannot be at exchange 2,3,4 or 5, Van 1 cannot be at exchange 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, etc)
  3. Safety: As a reminder, for support legs we are allowed to support our runner.  Non-support legs we cannot support our runners at all 12 (Rebecca), 16 (Danielle), 17 (John), 18 (AnneMarie), 19 (Tom), 30 (AnneMarie). Any non-supported legs beyond 4 miles will have at least one water station.
  4. Safety: Non-runners outside the van will need to have an orange safety flag with them in order to cross the street.
  5. Flags: We will need to supply a credit card at check in to get two orange flags.  If the flags are not returned, there will be a $15 charge.  Each van will have to do this to get their own two orange flags.
  6. Safety: No sleeping in parking lots.
  7. Safety: When pulling over to assist a runner, the can must be completely off the road.  Police are expected to be on high alert along the coast looking for violations.
  8. Heat: Forecasts call for temperatures of 93-103 and 74-84 along the coast.
  9. Waivers: A separate waiver for the County of San Diego is required to be signed when we check in.
  10. Chip Timing:  Runner #1 (James) will wear the chip to start the race and Runner #12 (Rebecca) will need to wear the chip on her last leg.  This way they capture accurate start and finish times.  We must not lose the chip.
  11. Course notes: Leg 1-4 (James, Wade, Nikki & Danielle) are along the Santa Ana River Trail.  Very little support, if any can be provided to the runners.
  12. Course notes: Leg 11 (Amy) There is construction for about 1⁄4 mile on Temescal Canyon Road, closing the northbound lane of traffic. We
are putting traffic control on the leg, but need all vans to take an alternate route using Campbell Ranch Road to Indian Truck Trail. We will have van directional signage on the route. This will help keep runners safe with significantly less traffic to worry about.
  13. Exchange 12 (Rebecca) Please enter Alberhill Park by turning left onto Coal Road. There are lane dividers set up that make it impossible to make a left hand turn into park from Lake Street.
  14. Leg 31 (Tom) is mostly on sidewalks and trails. It gets a little confusing and there will be plenty of people around, so make sure to have your runner familiarize themselves with that leg map. Vans, please do not follow the runner. We rerouted you to stay on Torrey Pines because of the traffic congestion in La Jolla. Vans will inevitably get behind their runner if they drive through here.
  15. Leg 34 (Tiffany) Harbor Drive is closed from 28th Street to 32nd Street due to construction. Vans need to detour to Main Street to National City Blvd to 8th Street turning left back onto Harbor. We will have van directional to help. Runners will stay on Harbor, running against traffic in the bike lane through the construction area.
FINISH LINE PARKING: ONLY participant vans with hang tags are allowed to park at the finish line. There is a park and ride shuttle for other vehicles at $10 per vehicle. This is located at Mar Vista High School, 505 Elm Ave, Imperial Beach from 10:00am-8:00pm. Last shuttle leaves finish line at 8:00pm and gates will be locked at the school after last shuttle arrives. Silverstrand Beach parking starting at 7:00pm will be open to spectators.

The Van Plan

We have the van plan figured out.
Van #1 - James will pick up our 15 passenger van Thursday afternoon, April 19th and drive it to Moorpark.  Since I won't be leaving a vehicle for Van #1 runners to get home after the race, the Gredings will drive Nikki Fenske's van down Friday morning and park it for us.  We'll get the keys at the exchange #6.

On Friday, Van #1 will need to leave Moorpark about 3:30am.   Ouch!

Van #2 - The Omers will drive the team down (less the Gredings who are driving Nikki's van) to Executive Van Rentals.  The team should expect to arrive just before they open at 7:30am to give the team time to park the two vans, get the 15 passenger van and get to Exchange 6 by 9am to check in.

In Friday, Van #2 will need to leave Moorpark about 6:30am.

After the race, we'll drive separately as teams to drop off the vans.  Van #1 will drive Nikki's van home to Moorpark and Van #2 will drive the Omers van back to Moorpark.

saturday morning run for 4/7/2012

for the run this week let's re-attempt to run the wash. hopefully it won't rain like last week. meet at the corner of l.a. and spring, across the street from 7-11. Start time is 7:00 a.m.

Thursday, April 5, 2012

Van 1 will need a vehicle to get back to Moorpark

We have reservations for our two 15 passenger vans.  I will pick one up on Thursday afternoon--I'll be flying into LAX that afternoon.  That means I won't be able to leave a car there for Van 1 to get home after the race.

Can someone from Van 2 drive an extra van (it must fit six people) Friday morning when you pick up your 15 passenger van and park it near the van rental place?  Van 1 will use that van to get back to Moorpark after returning our 15 passage van.
